Jewish High Holidays Specialties

110 years of tradition, a new year of sweetness

As the irresistible scent of freshly baked challah fills the air, we at Orwashers find ourselves reflecting on a journey that began over a century ago. Since 1916, our bakery has stood as a symbol of Jewish heritage and tradition in the heart of New York’s Upper East Side. Founded by an immigrant family from Hungary, our humble storefront quickly became a gathering place for the local Eastern European community, offering a taste of home with every loaf that emerged from our ovens.

Today, as we prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we’re grateful for the generations of customers who have made our bakery a cherished part of their holiday traditions. We’re proud to continue serving the community with the same dedication to quality and craft that our founders brought with them from Hungary all those years ago. Our bakery is more than just a place to buy bread; it’s a piece of New York history, a symbol of perseverance, and a testament to the enduring power of tradition.

The High Holidays are a time for reflection, renewal, and, of course, enjoying delicious food with loved ones. Whether you’re cutting a slice of our Apple Honey Cake for a sweet New Year or gathering around the table to break the Yom Kippur fast, we’ve got you covered with a menu that honors our Jewish heritage while adding a few modern twists we hope you’ll love.

Our Apple Honey Cake is the epitome of Rosh Hashanah—soft, decadent, and perfectly sweetened to usher in a year of happiness and prosperity. It's so good, it might just make you kvell! Pair it with our Traditional Round Challah, a symbol of the cycle of life, or our Raisin Challah, which adds a delightful pop of sweetness to each bite. Feeling adventurous? Try our Chocolate Chip Challah, because who says you can’t have a little fun with tradition?

And let’s not forget Bubbe’s favorite…Bubbe's Chocolate Babka. We’ve been told it’s “better than Bubbe used to make,” but we’ll let you be the judge of that. Lastly, but certainly not least, our Matzah Ball Soup, because nothing says comfort like a bowl of warm matzah ball soup, especially when it’s made with the love and care you’ve come to expect from Orwashers.
