About us

Founded by a Hungarian immigrant family in 1916, the bakery began as a small storefront in the Upper East Side. It was borne out of a desire to serve local immigrant community members and focused on the high quality rye, black and grain breads that reflected the traditions of their homeland.

OUR BAKERIES

Black and white picture featuring the Orwashers Bakery on the Upper East Side; a father and child are leaving the bakery, holding a bag of baked treats; a chain across the opening to the cellar keeps passersby safe.
A hand is outstretched in the foreground, holding a to-go cup labeled with Orwashers, holding a hot cup of coffee or tea; in the foreground is the blurred out facade of the Upper West Orwashers awning and glass windows.
